Giddy Up Cowgirls!

This weekend we brought the cows home. I could not believe how fast the time came. It seemed that we just took them up, but that was 5 months ago first part of June. Kelle came up to play cowgirl with me and at first we didn't think we would be able to bring the horses, since the truck that we would have used broke down, but late Friday night, John and Chris pulled together to get us a trailer and truck to haul the horses up. And boy we are so glad we did. Saturday morning, we got up early and took off for Avery Acres. We began sorting the cows and thought all cows were there. A few minutes later, we found out the semi that was hired to haul most of the cows home, had slipped on the icy road and jack-knifed, blocking the road to the cabin. Kelle and I almost had to drive the entire herd down (which would have been a lot of work for just 2 horses), but the guys got together and decided that we would haul the cows down truck load at a time and transfer the cows to the semi down in the valley. It looked like Kelle and I were not going to herd cows, which made us sad. But as hauled out about 3 loads of cowsChris noticed we were missing about 6 cows and their calves so he sent Kelle and I to find them. We rode for about 3 hours looking for those cows. We covered a lot of ground, but we were able to finally find them. The horses were getting tired but as soon as they saw those cows, the got pep in their step and drove those missing cows to the corals at the cabin. We were glad we found the cows, the horses were glad they were finished for the day and we were glad we were able to bring all the cows home.
Last year we were not so lucky, we actually could not get a wandering cow and calf and they became the meal for a mountain lion. So we are glad that we had better luck than last year. We had a great time, warmer weather than the past years and had great help

Thanks Kelle for your help and willingness to come up from SLC. John was happy to have you helping. Chris and I enjoyed having you stay with us even if it was for less than 48 hours.

Riding out to find the stray cows.

Taking a breather after we found and drove the cows back to the cabin.

The frozen pond and the view of what is about to come our way.
Frozen water and snow on the ground.
Brrrr, makes me cold just looking at it.
Sassy getting a well deserved drink after her hard work.

Enjoying the pasture land behind the house.
It's sure nice to have the cows home, but with that comes regiment of feeding them when it is 20 degrees below zero.

Sounds like a lot of work, but sounds like with more help and a great attitude it was a fun time.
