San Diego Family Vacation

Family Vacation

In March David called with a fabulous idea. He wanted to go to San Diego with his little family but didn't want to go alone, so he called to invite us. We planned to go and mom and dad decided they should come too, especially since they had Maggie and Ron's two little kids while they were in Hawaii.

We left on Saturday May 24th and met up with David and Rachel for lunch at Dave's favorite restaurant. Then headed down to St. George to make sure we made it in time for Hayden's birthday party. On our way down, we had a major blowout with our back tire. It was so powerful it wrecked the fender of the car. Not a good way to start out.

We quickly changed the tire and reported the incident to the insurance company and were on our way. We were not going to allow this to ruin our trip.

We made it to St. George and had a blast at the splash park. Lucas loved being reunited with Hayden and Grace (though I don't think Grace felt the same way) There they played for hours in the water and then Grandma and Grandpa took him on his first carousal ride. He rode it like three times

Sunday was a typical Sunday, we went to church with Grandma and Grandpa and then it turned south. Little did I know our little lunch excursion would almost cost us our trip. That evening Lucas started to puke every where, I guess Rachel's kids were sick and Rachel was carrying that bug. Her and Luke shared some bites and thus he got sick. He puked a handful of times Sunday and Monday and Chris and I were beginning to reconsider and take him back to Idaho.  Tuesday morning he was feeling completely better so the trip was still on.
                                                                                SAN DIEGO HERE WE COME
We loaded up the two cars. Mom and Dad with Hayden and Grace in their car, David, Andrea and Kyler with us. We got to our first stop just outside the NV/CA border to stop for lunch and all was well, but about an hour after that Hayden threw up in their car. Oh no, we hope it just something he ate and not what Luke had.

We kept going after they got him cleaned up and the car cleaned up and we were off again. But about 40 minutes into the drive he pukes again. Not good. Cleaned up and driving for about 15 minutes when Grace pukes. Mom and Dad had a car full of puking kids. I have never felt so bad in my life. We don't want to turn around, but thinking we just might have too. Mom and dad said they still wanted to go. So we kept driving. After three or four more puke sessions the kids were out of clean clothes, car reeked of vomit and we still were 3 hours out. So we stopped one more time at a car wash, cleaned the kiddos and then I took the kids' clothes over to the wash bay and power sprayed their cloths. I'll tell you this, if you think you have a tough stain, take it to the car wash. Takes it out like it wasn't even there.   At this point, I think our vacation was jinxed and doomed to fail. Everything that could go wrong did and then some.

After 10 hours in the car through a very hot desert we made it to San Diego. The kids in our car did so well and we were so proud. (us momma's came prepared with multiple things to occupy this kidlets).

Wednesday morning we were still not sure if we would get to Sea World or if we would be hanging out at the pool cause Grace and Hayden still didn't feel that great. But Dad made the decision for us and sad we should go just incase Kyler, Andrea or anyone else go sick, we might never make it.  So we ate breakfast and headed to Sea World.  Lucas had a blast seeing the big whales and loved the Shamu show. He loved seeing all of the animals and touching some of the exhibits. He even got to meet Cookie Monster and Elmo. He loved them and it was so cute to see that he was a little shy towards them but still would give them hugs. When we took Hayden to Disneyland at his age, it took a lot of coaxing to get him near the characters.

Thursday we were all past the sickness and we decided to make it a lazy day and stay around the pool that afternoon and by the evening go to the Temple and see Old San Diego. It was a fun day were we just spent a few dollars for dinner.

While swimming, we learned that Lucas loves to swim and was even willing to put the arm floats on and swim with them. He wanted to be a big boy. His love of the water has scared me cause of the ditches that run in our yard. So I think swimming lessons are in the near future.

On our final day we spent several hours at the beach. It was so much fun. We played in the surf, built sand castles, and flew kites. We completely enjoyed out time at the beach, we had sand coming out of every nook and cranny.

To finalize the day we grabbed lunch on the pier and rode the carousel again. Final stop was to get a mammoth sized ice cream cone. Luke loved it.

Our drive home was very none eventful thankfully and even though our trip started off rough, we all had a great time. I can't wait to do it again.
